I am the head of the research group on "Applied Algebra" at the Department of Mathematics of the Technische Universität Braunschweig.

I am also an elected member of the German Young Academy -- Die Junge Akademie (Class 2019; my profile at the JA).
In the academic year 2022/23, I served as the chair of Die Junge Akademie (and was a member of the board in the years 2021/22 and 2022/23). Here you can find the press release.

In the years 2019 - 2024 I was a member of the Emmy Noether Program of the DFG, leading a project on "New Certificates of Nonnegativity and Their Application in Science and Engineering".
Before I came to TU Braunschweig, I held positions at the Technical University Berlin, the Texas A&M University, the Saarland University, and the Goethe University.

Here you can find my CV.

Office hours: By appointment

We are hiring!

We are searching one PhD student for my group in the area of nonnegativity and polynomial optimization. The position is part of the DFG project "Sums of Nonnegative Circuit Polynomials and Combinatorics in Polynomial Optimization" in the priority program SPP 2458 "Combinatorial Synergies". Our group pursues the project in cooperation with the group of Thorsten Theobald.
The anticipated starting date is August 1st, 2024 or as soon as possible afterwards. You can find the advertisement with further information here here. The official opening on the university website is located here.
The deadline for applications is June 14th, 2024. Please send a CV, a letter of motivation, your degree certificates (preliminary certificates are sufficient during the application process) and, up to two reference letters (if available) to applied_algebra(AT)tu-braunschweig.de. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions about the position or the application process.

How to reach me

Communication via email is slow and takes a (too) significant portion of working hours. It is it challenging to repond to all requests, particularly in a timely manner. Hence, for complex matters, if possible please make an appointment. When writing me, if possible please reach out to me as follows:

Editorial, Organizatorial and Committee Work

I am an associate editor for the SIAM Journal on Applied Algebra and Geometry.

I am member of the advisory board for the MEGA conference series.

I am a member of the ISSAC 2024 Programm Committee.

Joint with Frédéric Bihan, Alicia Dickenstein, and Elisenda Feliu I am organizing the BIRS workshop Positive Solutions of Polynomial Systems Arising from Real-life Applications in Granada in May 2024.

Joint with Boulos El Hilany, Dirk Lorenz, Tim Römer and Stefan Kunis I am organizing the Seminar on Applied Algebra and Analysis (AAA Seminar).

In June - November 2022 I was joint with Sebastian Stiller, supported by Janin Heuer, the main organizer for "Die 7 größten Abenteuer der Mathematik" ("The 7 Biggest Adventures in Mathematics") - a series of talks and outreach activities about the seven Millennium Problems taking place in seven German cities.
The event was organized by Die Junge Akademie (in a project joint with our Alumna Anna Wienhard) and the Deutsche Mathematiker Vereinigung. It was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, and was under patronage of Bettina Stark-Watzinger, the federal Minister of Education and Research.
Here you find the poster, the press release (in German), and the trailer for the series. The recorded talks are here.
